About AB Woodworking

Handmade Furniture, Built by Us in Teesside

How It All Started

In 2016, founder Andrew suffered an injury at work which meant he had to take some time away from his job.

Having spent time thinking about what he really wanted to do, he realised that the work he'd been doing wasn't particularly fulfilling. Woodworking, however, was something that had interested him for some time.

So he decided to give it a go.

With just a few tools and a garden shed as a workshop, AB Woodworking was born.

The first projects were simple — cutting boards, ornaments and small wooden pieces — but what started as a way of exploring a new interest quickly became something much bigger.

From the Garden Shed to a Workshop

As demand grew, the garden shed was no longer quite enough.

A few years after starting the business, AB Woodworking moved into the Stockton Business Centre, giving Andrew more space and the opportunity to take on larger projects.

From there, the business continued to grow, eventually moving to a dedicated workshop on Skinner Street, Stockton-on-Tees.

It was here that the business really began to develop into the furniture maker it is today.

A Family Business

While at the Skinner Street workshop, Andrew was joined by his son, Lewis, bringing the next generation into the business.

Working together, the range of work expanded from smaller woodworking projects into handmade furniture, dining tables, shelves, mantels and bespoke pieces.

The workshop became busier, the projects became bigger and AB Woodworking continued to grow through a combination of word-of-mouth recommendations, returning customers and an increasing presence online.

Our New Workshop in Billingham

After five years on Skinner Street, we had reached the point where we needed more room to continue growing.

In 2026, AB Woodworking moved into our new workshop on Lagonda Court in Billingham.

The new workshop gives us the space to take on larger projects, improve how we work and continue developing the range of handmade furniture we offer.

It's a pretty big change from where we started in that garden shed — but the basic idea hasn't changed.

We're still a small, hands-on woodworking business, and we're still personally involved in the furniture we make.

What We Make

Today, we create a range of handmade wooden furniture and bespoke pieces, including:

  • Handmade dining tables

  • Rustic wooden shelves

  • Floating shelves

  • Pine and oak fireplace mantels

  • Dining benches

  • Bespoke furniture

  • Live edge and resin furniture

  • Custom woodworking projects

Every piece is made to order, allowing us to work with customers to create furniture that's right for their space.

Handmade in Teesside

We're proud to be a Teesside woodworking business, and a large part of our work comes from customers in the local area.

Our workshop in Billingham allows us to serve customers throughout Stockton-on-Tees, Billingham, Middlesbrough, Thornaby, Yarm, Norton, Hartlepool and the surrounding areas, while we also deliver our furniture throughout England.

Whether you're looking for a simple handmade shelf or a completely bespoke dining table, we like to keep things personal. You'll be dealing directly with the people making your furniture rather than a large furniture company or anonymous online retailer.

Why We Do It

For us, woodworking isn't just about making something out of timber.

It's about taking a raw material and turning it into something that's going to become part of someone's home — a dining table where a family eats together, a mantel that becomes the focal point of a room or a shelf that's filled with things that matter to them.

After starting with a few tools in a garden shed, we're proud of how far AB Woodworking has come.

And we're even more excited about where we're going next.
